International Conference

An international conference and a seminar held during the project in order to show project results, and disseminate best practice experience to international experts, environmental authorities and for military environmental professionals. The events took place in Győr, Hungary, which is the most appropriate place for such events near the project area. This city is easily accessible both from Budapest and from Vienna as well.

The 2-day international conference (1 day for plenary talks and a 1-day field trip) held in September of 2013. Environmental experts and scientists, land managers were invited beside officials from the Hungarian Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Defence, environmental authorities and NGOs. Organization work was carried out by beneficiary no. 4 on the international level and beneficiary no. 2 on the national level.

It was an adequate opportunity to demonstrate the success and efficiency of LIFE+ projects and gives a positive example of how damaged areas could be reintegrated to environmental protection actions and also how these type of projects could be sustainably funded. The topics show a wide context of the particular conservation action. The results of the project was shown to a wide international forum of experts and governmental officers. There was two topics at the conference that would count as a new issue: firstly the results of the survey on civil perception on participation of the military in nature conservation projects was disseminated. The potentially encouraging results were expected to enhance decision makers to put a bigger emphasis and allocate more funds for environmental and nature project of the military.

A field trip to the project site after the one-day meeting was planned to demonstrate the results and some of the best practice activities on the field. Open discussion was generated on how the experience gathered during the course of the project can be applied to other projects.
